The Evolution of Fire Trucks

By Anita Lyon

The Evolution of Fire Trucks. Fire engines have become iconic in our times. The big red truck is immediately linked with bravery, emergencies and of course - fire, a destructive force that can cause havoc to residential areas, wildlife sanctuaries, crops and farms. Raging infernos can not only kill, but also cause extensive damage to businesses and land. Unfortunately, it was more difficult to battle the blaze in the past, and firefighters or farm occupants back then didn't have the shiny, mean red machine to call upon. To show you where the beloved water tanker known as the fire truck came from, here is a brief history:

Early models: OK, so the fire truck couldn't actually come into existence before the truck was invented. The first fire fighting vehicles were actually portable water pumps. Created in the 1700's, the "bucket brigade" would use man power to pull these hand or steam powered pumps to the location of the fire. Into the 1800's, firefighters were eventually starting to get paid for their efforts and horses were brought on board to assist in transporting the pump.

The first fire engine: As technology evolved and new creations were being introduced, the weight of the equipment was unable to be hauled by horses and in 1841, the first self-propelled, steam-powered fire engine in the US arrived. Built in New York, it was first seen as a dangerous and unreliable option by firefighters, but after decades passed by, it finally became popular.

Steam power replaced: It was not long before steam power was succeeded and motorised trucks began taking over. In 1911, Mack Trucks started producing a fire truck of their own and it eventually became one of the most popular manufacturers in the industry.

Ladders included: Buildings began increasing in size and although the ladder was already around, it began being fitted directly to the vehicle. Following World War 2, the aerial platform was introduced, which gave firefighters access to the most difficult to reach corners.

An icon is born: During the 1960's, the fire truck began turning into the saviour we are used to seeing today. Of course, as new technology has become available, it has been added to improve the truck. Everything from the turntable ladder to hydraulic platforms and versatile 4x4 trucks are now readily available in an emergency.

It's hard to believe that this all evolved from a small man-powered water pump on wheels to what it is now!

The Monster Truck Tires

By Fred Ballis

The Monster Truck Tires. If you have been using conventional tires for your jacked up truck and finding it hard to pull tractors and mud bogs using the trucks, then perhaps you should look at the option of changing over to specialized and extra large tires as well as wheels. These tires are now available in the market thanks to the push by the Monster truck enthusiasts as well as agricultural vehicle industry.

Unlike what many believe that the horsepower of the engine and the ground clearance that you are able to achieve with the upgraded jacked up truck lies its effectiveness, the fact remains that it is the tires that matter the most and makes it effective utility. This is not known to many people though.

What we recommend for your jacked up truck for getting the best performance is to try the D12 Caterpillar bulldozer tires. These 1000 pounds tires are capable of wielding power like the monsters. You might need to customize your truck a bit to be able to fit them.

It is not easy for you to find the modified D12 tires. Most owners buy the original tires from the aftermarket and get them modified for their requirement. Though they start at 1000 pounds after modification they come down to about 800 to 850 pounds.

There are specialized retreading machine shops that have the required machinery to modify the D12 size tires. It does require expertise to be able to cut down the size of the tire to match your truck requirement. This can take a while for the process needs to be slow and done carefully. Earlier on there were mechanics who used to do this process manually until machines replaced the retreading process.

One other thing that you need to bear in mind is to buy the tire from a proven and reputed company. It is best that you go in for Goodyear or Firestone tires which are proven in this particular segment. You should be able to get a tire well under 1800 dollars.

Before you plan to get your jacked up truck fitted with retreaded D 12 tires it is important for you to understand technically as well as functionally what you are trying to do. Speak to those who have got this job done before and see how they are finding it and then decide to go ahead with the project.

The project is more complicated that you really imagine it to be, because it is not only that the tire is retreaded to match the truck, but the truck too has to undergo certain amount of customization in terms of 4 link suspension as well as special chassis and body to be able to fit these tires. So you will need some expert guidance for this project.

Daily Forklift Truck Maintenance

By Charlotte NJ Mclean

Daily Forklift Truck Maintenance. Many businesses require a forklift truck for their day to day operation. A forklift truck can be a valuable piece of machinery for any business involved in, or planning to be involved in, the movement of heavy goods and materials. Forklifts are used extensively, and there are many different types of machine, each more suited to a specific job that the next. Fuel type is one such consideration in the process of selecting the correct machine for the application. Forklifts are available as diesel, gas or electric, regardless of fuel type all require daily maintenance checks to ensure the safety and smooth running of the vehicle on a day to day basis. The following article provides an overview of what these checks should include for each fuel type, and who should carry them out.

Anyone involved in the operation of a forklift truck should be qualified to do so. This is a legal requirement much like obtaining a driving licence. Furthermore qualifying to operate one type of truck, does not cover the same operator to drive another. For example a licence for a telescopic handler would not cover the same operator to drive a rough terrain forklift truck. This is important to take note of, if your business requires the use of a number of different types of machine.

Ensure that any operators have taken a conversion course to cover any additional truck types they are required to drive (see earlier article for more details on forklift truck driver training). A key component of any forklift truck training course, and one of the first elements to be taught is the routine daily checks, which must be performed on the machine prior to use. This is the case for diesel, gas or electric trucks, for which the following checks should be performed:

Electric

1. Check battery electrolyte levels after charging battery
2. Check hydraulic oil level
3. Check all wheel nuts for tightness
4. Inspect hoses for leaks and damage
5. Visually inspect tyres for damage and inflation pressure
6. Top up batteries with distilled water/di-ionised

Additionally ensure that batteries are recharged after each shift, and avoid engaging in random charging.

Diesel / Gas

1. Check radiator water level
2. Check engine oil level
3. Check all wheel nuts for tightness
4. Check fuel level
5. Visually check water trap
6. Inspect hoses for leaks and damage
7. Examine tyres visually for damage and inflation pressure

Ensuring that the above checks are carried out not only prolong the life and ensure the safety of your forklift truck, they also reduce any costs incurred. Any neglect or misuse of a forklift will result in damage and hence unnecessary costs, therefore it is wise to make sure operators sign off on such duties on a daily basis.

In summary making certain that your machine is well maintained, and daily checks carried out, can not only prolong the life of any machine the business owns and ensure safety is preserved, but also make sure that additional costs are not incurred and the smooth running of your business is ensured.

What Makes A Great GPS System?

By Robyn Ball

What Makes A Great GPS System?. Top-brand commercial geopositioning systems (GPS) should always be linked to constant upgrades and updates. Roads, highway ramps, motels, hotels, fuel stops, eateries, parks and other traveler amenities all change from week to week. Roads close for construction. The Department of Transportation may limit commercial vehicle access on some roads. Exit and merge ramps open and close for construction. Motels, hotels, RV parks, fuel stops, restaurants and cafes all open and close without warning.

GPS units should contain state by state data input that enables drivers to export mileage information to a spreadsheet. This feature would plan best routes for time and distance. This report function should also allow commercial drivers to track toll vs. non-toll miles by state or province for IFTA fuel tax reporting. Owner Operators and Drivers should be able to review data input by quarter or by the day, by state and/or province.

Warning systems on top brands should provide alarms for the distance ahead and be able to report on what is around the corner or down the road. Drivers would then be able to make adjustments for speed or stopping distance way ahead of time. Alerts should include sharp curves, steep hills, speed limit changes, over-speed-limit indicator, state boundaries, road construction, time zone changes, and on/off duty changes.

As drivers are approaching their final destination, address ranges and street names should display on the status bar. Getting there features should zoom to the neighborhood or city as a customization for that trip in that vehicle.

When a driver needs to pull off the road for a brief stop, or is taking an alternate route, units with auto re-route should have pause/resume features to avoid unnecessary GPS activity on the unit. There should also be a quick display of the entire route at a highway level so that drivers are never lost and know in advance which roads they will travel.

The unit should function in several languages like English, Spanish, and French for the North American continent. Text and verbal translations should be available for drivers that use English as a second language to fully benefit from the product. This is a critical business tool for the professional driver.

How helpful can speed limit changes and over-the-limit alarms be for protecting a driver's livelihood and saving lives? It's one thing to record this data for the view of the safety manager alone and quite another to make it available to the driver so the professional can take the appropriate action with that same information. Information is empowering and a lack of it results in punitive measures and being treated like an irresponsible child.

A Closer Look At America's Favorite Trucks

By Jacqueline Star

A Closer Look At America's Favorite Trucks. There's a reason why many individuals choose to drive a truck; not only are these durable vehicles perfectly suited for hauling heavy loads, many are also refined and comfortable enough to drive to work and run errands with. And on top of that many of these trucks sport advanced features such as LCD screens which let you know the progress of a towing job or how much fuel you've got left. Here is our list of a few of the top trucks to consider if you're thinking about getting one.

One truck that is a bit out of the ordinary is the Ridgeline; this is due to the fact that it's a blend of SUV and truck all wrapped into one sweet little package. Many drivers also like the fact that its handling is very similar to that of a car. One drawback is that it doesn't sport as much power as some real workhorses such as the F150. The engine is a six cylinder with an output of 250 hp. Mileage is good for its class at 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the freeway. The cabin seats five adults. Optional features include Bluetooth compatibility and a Linked Navigation System which can be controlled via voice commands. There are three trim levels; the RT, RTS and RTL. The RT is priced at around $29k.

Next in line is the famous F-150 truck by Ford; this truck is as All-American as you can get. The best part is that there are tons of options to customize and configure it to your own liking. You can opt for the base model for just $23k or customize it with all sorts of options and a state of the art V8 engine for a fancy model costing $50k. There are three different engine choices available; the base is a V6 3.7 while the mid-range engine is a V8 Eco Boost V6 which comes with either your pick of 360 or 365 hp. A V8 6.2 Liter engine is also available for those who carve an immense amount of power with 411 hp. The base model is pretty strong; it can tow 5,500 pounds of cargo while the top of the line V8 can tow up to 11,300 pounds. If you like tech gadgets then this auto delivers; a screen lets you know how much you've towed and other pertinent details.

The most wallet-friendly truck on our list is the Ford Ranger; this truck is a bit smaller than the rest. One drawback however is that the ride isn't as smooth as compared with the F-150 for every day driving. There are two engine choices available; a V4 2.3 Liter with 143 hp or a V6 with 207 hp. The V6 model can tow up to 5,800 pounds. The base model seats 3 adults while the super cab has room for 5 persons. Options include an AM/FM stereo with an audio jack and a 60/40 split bench seat.

History of the Garbage Truck or Trash trucks

By Shawn A Robertson

Garbage trucks are now an essential part of the modern civilization. One can see a number of refuse trucks running on the roads and streets in the late night or in the early morning. Trash trucks are the most important vehicles to keep our surroundings clean and healthy. Waste trucks pick up the garbage from different parts of the city or town and off load it in the garbage dumping grounds or waste management sites established for this purpose. There are a number of websites where you can collect useful information about these refuse trucks and used garbage trucks. With the increasing urbanization, generation of garbage from all the households has substantially increased. One can not imagine about clean and pollution free environment without the existence of these useful vehicles.

Basically, there are five types of garbage trucks- front loaders, rear loaders, grapple truck, pneumatic collection and side loaders. These are used at different places according to the various types of job requirements. Initially, wagons and animals were used to carry away waste but with the passage of time and some technological advancement in the field of automotives, trucks with open tops were introduced in the year 1920. The trucks with their open type left a stinking air with their movement and the garbage was also seen to spill over. To overcome this problem, trucks with covered tops were made and used for this purpose. To begin with, these trucks were used first time in the densely populated countries of Europe and North America and subsequently in the rest part of the world.

It was felt that it is quite a difficult task for the garbage collectors to lift the waste to the shoulder height and then put it into the truck. To solve this problem, hopper model in the year 1929 was introduced which was based on the cable system to lift the garbage from the ground. In 1937, George Dempster came forward with a model in which waste containers with wheels were made to tip into the waste carrying vehicles. This model was known as dumpster. In the year 1938, with the introduction of the Garwood load packer, there was a revolutionary change in the field of garbage disposal vehicles. These load packers had the novel concept of compactors being attached to a garbage truck. With the use of a hydraulic press, the capacity of a waste truck was almost doubled.

In the year 1955, the first front loader dumpster was launched in the market but these front loading vehicles were not more commonly seen till the year 1970. During the middle part of the 1970s, Peterson industries manufactured first ever grapple truck for disposal of garbage in municipal areas. In the year 1997, Lee Rathbun came forward with the rear steer system in a refuse truck. This system enabled the driver to drive and operate the loader simultaneously with the help of an elevated, rear facing cab. This increased the speed of garbage disposal in a considerable manner.

Shawn A. Robertson is a expert author on refuse trucks, garbage trucks and trash trucks. He has written a number of articles like buying garbage trucks and used refuse trucks, and waste trucks.

Choosing the Perfect Tyre For Your Truck

By Vector Kasimba

A Truck is the most efficient vehicle to carry substantial amount of goods across large distances. Trucks are the most powerful vehicles as compared to others and are mainly used for commercial and industrial purposes. Since it is mainly employed for heavy-duty work, it becomes important that its Tyres should always be in top condition. It is essential to consider several points while buying a Tyre for your Truck so that you can get the best Tires that add to the Truck's performance.

Driving technique: The foremost thing to consider when buying a Truck Tire is your own Driving Technique and based on that you can assess how well the Tire will perform. If you always drive on high speeds with frequent use of power brakes, then the Tyre should be able to handle the sudden wear and tear, caused due to braking and have excellent traction properties.

Location: How long a Tyre would last also depends upon the location where the Truck would be driven. If the Truck is generally driven on smooth highways, then a Tire with a wide base and low profile would be suitable. An ability to handle high speeds would be a prerequisite, but it also means that the Tyre would not last for a long time.

On the other hand if the Truck is driven off-road on irregular terrain, then it should have specially designed tread patterns that have a good grip on the road as well as a large size for stability.

Safety: There are various factors that determine whether a Tyre is the safest for your Truck or not. Some of them are mentioned below:

· Braking-: A good Tire is resistant to wear and tear even when braking is done frequently and suddenly
· Handling- The Tyre must give good performance even on rough handling
· Resistance to hydroplaning- The Tyre must provide high friction on road contact even in wet conditions
· Winter traction- The Tyre must be able to handle slippery roads in winters

Size and Speed Rating of the Tyre: It is advisable to check the present size and speed rating of your Truck Tyre and buy accordingly as it can have an impact on the Truck's performance. Speed rating of the new Tire can be greater but do consider the base of the Tyre while buying a new one.

Consider Multiple Options: Investing in a good Tyre is highly beneficial for the performance of a Truck as well for the Driver. So it is suggested to consider many options before buying them. You can check across retailers, tire dealers, truck dealers etc. to check different models.

Always buy new Tyres: Always make sure to buy Tyres that are manufactured recently. A Tyre is made up of several materials that degrade over time even if not in use, so it becomes important to go for the best quality by buying freshest Tires that will perform efficiently for a long time.

Apart from these factors, also consider the condition of the inner tubes of the Tyres and their rolling resistance that can significantly affect the air pressure of the Tyre and the fuel consumption of the Truck.

This is just a guide to buying the perfect Tire but ultimately how a Tire performs in the long run cannot even be guaranteed by the manufacturers. Proper maintenance is required on a regular basis to increase the Tyre's life and this includes checking the air pressure, alignment and other features of the Tyre from time to time and correct any defects present.

The 2010 Toyota Tacoma

by: Daniel Legal

Basically the 2010 Toyota Tacoma is the same truck produced for the '09 model year. It remains a great selection due to its wide assortment of body styles and trim packages. Other great features are the fact that although the Toyota corporation has had some technical problems, it remains a very reliable pickup. Tacomas equipped with larger engines offer more power than just about any competitors, including the Chevy Colorado. Few downsides include awkward seat positioning and a noisy V-6 engine. All around they remain more than capable work trucks.

Consumers who don't need a full size pickup truck will do well buying a 2010 Toyota Tacoma. For their size they offer industry leading carrying and hauling capabilities. While not quite able to haul as much as any half-ton on the market, their size makes them highly maneuverable and allows for a more nimble handling experience. Fuel economy is another aspect that will make these trucks more appealing, while the slightly higher price tag than competitors may put off some frugal minded buyers.

Trim packages available include Base models (regular cabs), access cabs, Double cabs, SR-5, and TR-D. As stated before the basic models only come with a regular cab body style and doesn't offer a whole lot in terms of accessories. Included on base models are 15 inch steel wheels, composite bed liners, tilt steering wheels, cloth seating, and an optional CD player. Basic models are better work trucks than anything, offering the class leading capabilities, without the higher prices. Access cabs represent Toyota's mid-level trim package. Standard features include AC, full power accessories, skid plates, bench seats in the rear, 16 inch steel wheels, and lumbar support for drivers.

Going up in class and style are the Double cab models. These come with 16 inch steel wheels, more tech gadget portals, highly customizable interior fabrics and accents, along with more skid plates to protect the undercarriage. SR-5 trim packages represent a entirely different experience for their owners. They have fog lamps, very nice seating, leather steering wheels with audio controls, rear cameras for backing up, remote keyless entry, and chrome accents throughout the pickup. The off road package (TRD) has been designed to handle rugged terrain. They come with 17 inch alloy wheels, sturdier suspension, sport style seating, fender flares, and heavy duty skid plates. TRD models can also be outfitted as sports packages designed for better highway handling.

The engines available for 2010 Toyota Tacoma pickups include a 2.7 liter four cylinder that put out 159 hp, that are offered with either a five speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission. The larger engine is a 4.0 liter V-6 capable of 236 hp, and comes with either a 6 speed manual or five speed automatic. Fuel economy for the smaller engine is 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, while the larger option gets 16 mpg city, and 20 mpg highway. Those numbers are relatively impressive when compared with the Chevy Colorado, but are slightly less impressive than the smaller Ford Ranger.

Crash test rating received perfect scores for both front and side impact crashes. That makes it one of the safest mid-size pickups available to consumers.

Overall, the 2010 Toyota Tacoma remains one of the best pickups in the small to mid-size class. Towing capabilities are more similar to that of a half-ton pickup than most of it's competitors. Pricing however is an area that the Tacoma remains less competitive, being offered at substantially higher numbers. Whether you're looking for a basic work truck, or a fully loaded luxury style interior there is a model to suit just about every consumer's preference.

Hybrid Trucks

by: Dan Riffle

With the increasing concern about environmental issues such as pollution and global warming, as well as the unbelievable rise in the price of gasoline, it is no wonder that hybrid vehicles are gaining popularity. Hybrid cars have been relatively common for years, with hybrid Sport Utility Vehicles in close competition, but what about hybrid trucks? We don't see those too often. Automotive manufacturing giant General Motors, however, believes that will change.

In 2005, GM introduced hybrid versions of the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra in Florida, California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Alaska. In 2006 the company made the vehicles available nationwide. These hybrid pickup trucks have 5.3 liter V-8 engines which have exactly the same amount of power and torque as there non-hybrid counterparts (295 horsepower, 325 pound/feet of torque). They can carry the same size loads, tow the same weights, and accelerate to the same degree that regular non-hybrid GM pickup trucks can. And they do it all while providing the most efficient gas mileage of any full-sized pickup on the market—about 20 miles per gallon on the highway. These hybrid trucks also feature a 2400 watt generator that can be used to power electrical devices, making them ideal for contractors or construction workers.

When compared to the Toyota Prius, a small hybrid car that gets 50 miles per gallon, 20 mpg might not sound like much. It is in fact only about a 10 percent difference from the fuel consumption of regular non-hybrid GM trucks. This is because the Prius is what is known as a “full hybrid,” which means that its internal combustion engine can shut off completely when the car is idle or driving at low speeds, relying solely on battery power and drastically improving fuel efficiency. This type of fuel savings is great, but it requires a significant compromise of power, which is something that the general pickup truck owner simply will not stand for.

Many truck owners use their vehicles for work related purposes, such as hauling heavy loads, and it is essential that a hybrid pickup truck be able to do this. If automotive manufacturers sacrifice power to gain fuel economy in hybrid trucks, their customers will disappear. Acutely aware of this, General Motors has decided that a little improvement is better than none at all.

Hybrid Cars and Trucks and the Environment

With fossil fuel emissions at levels of billions of tons per year and global warming becoming increasingly obvious, it is clear that sooner or later something must be done. For decades, scientists and researchers have tried to find alternative fuel sources, but there simply was nothing as convenient as the old standby—oil. The oil infrastructure is so vast and developed that is has become impossible to think of cars without thinking of gasoline, and many Americans are loath to change. But they must. Every major city in the country—New York, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, and most notably Las Angeles—is plagued by pollution. The cities are shrouded by smog, there are pollution warnings on weather reports, and at times it is impossible even to take a deep breath without noticing that something is wrong with the air. This is not a world that most of us want to live in. But if more people are willing to take the plunge and buy a hybrid car or truck, the effects over time will be enormous. A hybrid truck might be more expensive initially, but the fuel savings will soon make it worthwhile. And as hybrid technology improves, the cost of these vehicles will no doubt be reduced, making the future a lot brighter, and a lot less smoggy, for the next generation of Earthlings.

RC Nitro Trucks

by: Willie Kruger

RC nitro truck racing is a great hobby. The hobby is relaxing, exciting, but also challenging in many ways. RC nitro truck racing is a great way to divert your attention from your daily problems and RC nitro truck racing is a huge thrill.

In recent years, RC nitro truck racing has grown tremendously. There are clubs for RC nitro truck racing all over the world. These RC nitro truck clubs are usually affiliated to a governing body and local, national and international championships take place on a regular basis.

So, before you go and buy a RC nitro truck, first do some due diligence. RC nitro trucks can make a big hole in your pocket and if you buy a truck that is too difficult to get running or to control, you will definitely lose interest and waste a lot of money. My suggestion is, visit a few websites and get some information with regard to the different types and models available. This will save you a lot of time and money.

When considering the purchase of a RC nitro truck, you must decide if you would like to spend a lot of time tuning and setting up your new toy or if you want to get out to the track as soon as possible. You get different RC nitro trucks like the RTR (Ready to Run) versions where a simple run in of the engine is required. This version will get you on the track in no time. Then there are the KIT versions. These RC nitro trucks require you to build them up from scratch. You will also need to purchase a separate transmitter, receiver and servos for this kind of model.

Whether you just want to play or become a novice RC nitro truck racer, the possibilities are endless. Make sure you do your homework before you purchase a RC nitro truck.

Quick Tips For Buying Used Fire Trucks From A Dealer

by: Corey Matthews

The world of used fire truck sales is not all that different from used car sales. There are many hard working, honest companies out there trying to provide quality apparatus for fire departments nationwide, but the bad business practices of a few unethical dealers can greatly damage the reputation of every dealer in the industry.

When fire departments are in the market for an updated fleet of fire trucks, the two most common choices departments have is choosing whether to buy from a broker or a dealer. Both types of apparatus sellers can provide different levels of service. This article will examine the pros and cons of both types of seller, and provide a quick list of things to consider when choosing between working with a broker or dealer.

Both types of sellers are interested in finding a unit for their buyer. Listing services often have the appearance of having hundreds of units in their inventory. However, in most cases, listers don't actually "have" a single truck in inventory. As opposed to dealers, listing providers list the apparatus other used fire truck dealers (http://www.commandfireapparatus.com) own and charge a commission to the dealer for providing access to a sale. While brokers are interested in selling units, they don't care which unit you buy.

Another option to working with a listing service is shop for your used fire truck directly from a dealer.

Dealers buy their units directly from fire departments, cutting out the middleman and avoiding an increase in costs. Most used fire truck dealers try to find late model vehicles in their best condition and focus less on having the most units. Instead, they are more focused on having the best units for the right customers.

When you work with a dealer, ask them what they go over when they do a full service inspection of your vehicle. Do they change the filters and fluids? Check lighting systems and warning devices? Verify pump, aerial certification, and other vehicle safety systems? Even simple checks like brakes, tires, steering and more?

While listing services do appear to have the most variety in their inventory, all listing services do is take your information, pass it along to a dealer, and then collect a check for passing along your information. In order to save costs for yourself - take out the middleman cost and work with a dealer.

Below are a few questions you should answer for yourself about any type of company you are considering purchasing a used fire truck from:

1. Does your dealer personally search for and buy its entire inventory? Dealers don't simply list a truck or engine for another department - they sell the units they own themselves.

2. Do they offer any competitive warranties on the engine and transmission of their apparatus?

3. Who takes care of the lettering on the vehicle? Do you have to take the vehicle to another location to have this complete, or can the dealer do it?

4. Who takes care of delivery of the unit? Is there an additional cost?

5. If the dealer takes care of unit deliver, do they insure the until you receive it?

Buying Reconditioned Trucks

by: i80 Equipment

What’s the point of buying anything mechanical, electrical or computer-related used, if you end up having to pay a mint to get it into good-running condition? The whole point of not buying new in the first place is to save costs. Purchasing used or discount trucks is not the best option. Purchasing reconditioned trucks is.

I-80 Equipment understands that many companies don’t have the capital to buy new. And that’s why they offer like-new trucks at affordable prices. I-80 Equipment sells reconditioned used forestry trucks at pre-owned prices. Come again. What exactly does this mean? You’re getting the used truck, at a used truck price, but it’s reconditioned so that it’s as new as it can be. You can’t get rid of the mileage for example, but you can make sure that the brakes, electrical system, engine, steering suspension and power transmission meet or exceed federal inspection. And that’s not mentioning the body, cab, and tires.

I-80 Equipment takes pride in their Seven Step Reconditioning process. Their focus is “Quality” and on passing savings to their buyers. They don’t just do a power-wash, minimal inspection and put their trucks onto the lot to be test driven. Far from it! The reconditioning process is labour-intensive, and a labour of love.

You’re looking at a disassembly, degreasing /power-washing, and then a complete sand-down and de-denting for starters. Then the truck is driven into the paint bay, where it gets sprayed with a primer to give the boxes and chassis more protection, and then it’s sprayed again with an industrial paint, heated to 100 degrees. Only then are you looking a re-assembly, with part replacements, and waxing. The final stage is the 77 point inspection, the signing off by the mechanic, and then an external inspection and certification process.

I-80 Equipment understands that getting the right equipment at the right price is vital for a company. Companies, in the electrical, forestry, and telecom industries, for example, often rely heavily on their equipment to generate revenue. Without a fully-equipped range of trucks, their employees aren’t able to bill their clients for services rendered.

Call I-80 Equipment Company (the www.i80equipment.com) today, and ask them about the financing solutions they offer. With over 15 years in business, they know that to spend money, companies need to generate revenue. And they’re ready to be part of the process. They maintain very competitive prices, attractive financing and quality reconditioned bucket trucks and digger derrick trucks. Accessories include augers, auger straps, buckets, bucket liners, winch ropes, and much more! Range of brands include: Altec, Duralift, Hi-Ranger, Lift-All, MTI, Terex, Versalift. All of their trucks are listed on the website with mileage, gross weight, engine and fuel type and transmission.

I-80 Equipment Company won’t put a truck on the road without a full-fledged inspection, followed by an external inspection and certification process. The final stage in the inspection bay involves a 77 point inspection, the signing off by the mechanic, and then an external inspection and certification process. I 80 Equipment know their job is to keep their truck operators safe.

Bed Liners For Trucks

By Al Bullington

Bed liners of several kinds have become almost must-haves for pickups. Without some kind of protection, pickup beds soon turn to rust buckets. Simply using a pickup for casual hauling is bound to cause scratches, if not dents, and lead to corrosion in time. Spray on bed liners have several advantages over other options. Now these are offered as options even on new trucks. Usually for a new truck the application will be done by a local franchise of one of the big name liner companies.

Spray liners are after all really a paint application over the existing bed paint. But it is special paint. Partly it is special because it dries and cures very rapidly. The paint usually is a two part product mixed right at the spray gun. Engineered to cure fast, that means the time to get the project done is very short. Usually that means the truck only has to be at the applicator just a day or so.

Another major feature of the coating is thickness. Up to one-fourth inch thick, the lining durability relates partly to the large volume of material applied. The thickness of the coat means much paint can be torn or scratched away and the metal of the bed still is not touched. It isn't that the liner is so hard to damage, it's that there is just so much of it there.

The guarantee that comes with liners is not that the liner won't be harmed, it is that it will be repaired. Repair just means a respray, that's all. Another basic feature of liners professionally installed is proper preparation. Like for any paint coating, proper surface prep really is key to a coating that sticks. Scrimp on surface prep and the coating likely will be gone with the wind.

That guarantee you get means the surface prep will get done and it will be done right. Spray on bed liners work so well for a number of reasons. It's partly because of the material itself used in the coating. But it is partly just the careful application too. The guarantee you receive means the application must be done properly or the dealer will be forced to do it over again.

What I Don't Like About Tilting Truck Covers

By Al Bullington

Tilting truck covers, often referred to as fiberglass lids, are not my favorite truck covers. Here are reasons why these are not my favorite tonneaus.

Well, there's the matter of tall cargo. Haul virtually anything that's taller than the bed sides and you can't close the lid. How cool is that? You can't even carry a lawn mower without leaving the lid up. You can't even carry a garbage can. There's more.

If in fact the cover is made of fiberglass, there's the weight issue. See fiberglass is just by nature heavy. It is after all resin in glass fibers. That means it's heavy to install, heavy to lift and heavy to haul. Heavy in tonneau covers is not very good.

Then there is the look issue. Tilting lids can result in one of the slickest looking truck covers going. But the thickness of the material adds up to a covers that protrude far above the bed. It's noticeable to the point of being distracting. Looks are subjective, but I don't like the look.

Now there is a better solution if you want a tilting tonneau. Undercover covers aren't fiberglass at all and that makes all the difference. With Undercover you get modern polymer construction which results in a total weight of the cover of only 58 pounds for the whole cover.

Lightweight means it is easier to haul, but also easy to take off and put back on. That means the clearance issue is much less of an issue. With tall cargo, it's easy to just pull off the cover. It isn't a monument you see.

Tilting truck covers don't rate very high on my list, unless you pick the lightweight version. Then some of the issues really aren't issues anymore.
