At first blush it kind of seems like a huge crowd of people all trying to get your attention. If you can work through that initial overload shock there are some ways where it begins to make sense.

Instead of reading the canned publications news reporting, sometimes it is very interesting to see what the vast Twitterherd of people think. By using some basic commands you can dive into this huge traffic jam of thoughts and pull out just the pieces you would like. I have heard Twitter described as standing in the middle of a huge traffic jam trying to hand out business cards! To the newbies out there, it does kind of seem like that. In order to increase your following numbers it becomes necessary to follow people that don't really fall into your exact category or niche.
