8 New Ford Cars Models Coming Soon in India

Ford Motor Company will launch eight new vehicles in India by the middle of the decade as it moves to rapidly expand its presence in the fast growing market.

Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia Pacific and Africa (APA), made the announcement today during a keynote speech titled "Managing Growth – Evolving Market Dynamics" at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Conference in New Delhi.

"We have big plans for India and for this region," Hinrichs said. "As we have seen from the spectacular early success of the Ford Figo, more and more Indian consumers appreciate the fuel efficient, economical, high quality, safe, and fun-to-drive vehicles that Ford offers. By the middle of this decade we will introduce eight new vehicles to India from our global platforms, in segments appropriate for this market. This is part of our ‘better plan' to bring more and more vehicles from our vast global portfolio to India and other markets in Asia Pacific and Africa."

Ford India launched the Ford Figo subcompact in the first quarter of this year, selling more than 30,000 units in 25 weeks.

"Although the vast majority of vehicles we produce in India will help satisfy growing local demand, we also continue to pursue export opportunities," said Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India. "We are pleased to announce that Ford India will export our locally-produced, hot-selling Ford Figo to 50 new markets, including Mexico, North Africa and the Middle East starting next year."

Ford has been exporting the Figo to South Africa since May 2010. Ford India also exports the Ford Fiesta (branded as the "Ikon") and diesel powertrains to South Africa, as well as 1.4- and 1.6-litre petrol engines to Thailand. Ford sells the Endeavor, Ikon, Fiesta and Figo in India, all locally-produced.

The launch and export of both Figo and the engines are the result of a USD 500-million investment in India to expand manufacturing and set up an engine plant there.

Ford's APA region encompasses markets on three continents, including Australia, China, India, Thailand and South Africa. Industry sales in the region will increase from 16 million units in 2009, to an estimated 35 million units by 2018. The region is expected to account for nearly 70 percent of Ford's worldwide growth in the next decade.

Sales of vehicles in India have grown at an average annual rate of 17 percent over the past five years, and an estimated 10 million to 11 million people will migrate from two-wheeled forms of transport to small cars in the next few years.

Hinrichs' remarks at the SIAM conference focused on strategies for managing change, specifically the impact of rising demand and increasing capacity on the value chain.

"Introducing eight new vehicles by the middle of the decade is an ambitious plan that will have tremendous impact on our manufacturing operations, supply chain, dealers and employees. As part of our better plan for India, we are working today to make sure the value chain is ready for the demands we will place on it in the years to come," Hinrichs said.

Expanding capacity creates particular challenges for suppliers, which are responsible for a large part of a vehicle, and requires new approaches.

"In India and in the rest of the world, we are simplifying the way we work with suppliers by reducing complexity and expanding part commonality," Hinrichs said. "By 2012, more than 70 percent of the vehicles sold under the Ford brand globally will be built off 15 core platforms. By bringing suppliers into the development process earlier we can ultimately generate more profit for the supply chain."

This leads to lower development cost and greater economies of scale for our suppliers, and ultimately a higher quality and more economical vehicle for consumers, he said.

"To succeed in a place as unique and fascinating as India, we have learned to listen more closely to our customers, dealers and suppliers," Hinrichs said. "Our ONE Ford plan says to adapt and to localise. It has made us a better company here in India and around the world."

All New 2011 Ford Fiesta EPA Certified 40 MPG Rating: Most Fuel Efficient Car

Ford's all-new 2011 Fiesta – an Internet star even before it goes on sale this summer – will now stand out on the highway with an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified 40 mpg rating, making it the most fuel efficient car in its class.

The Ford Fiesta 40 mpg, achieved with Ford's new six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission, is 5 mpg better than the Honda Fit and 4 mpg better than the Toyota Yaris.

"The new Fiesta is yet another car in Ford’s lineup that delivers class-leading fuel economy," said Barb Samardzich, vice president, Global Powertrain Engineering. "From Super Duty to Fusion Hybrid and the new Mustang V-6, Ford is committed to fuel economy leadership with every new vehicle it introduces in all segments."

Fiesta's class-leading fuel efficiency follows Fusion Hybrid – America's most fuel efficient midsize sedan – and other fuel economy champs such as the Ford Escape Hybrid, Mercury Mariner Hybrid and Ford Ranger pickup. For 2011, the streak continues with the Mustang V-6, Ford Super Duty and now the responsive, sporty and economical Fiesta. Moving forward, Ford is committed to being a fuel economy leader in each segment in which it competes.

The Fiesta achieves its best-in-segment fuel figures thanks to a host of fuel-saving technologies not normally seen at this price level. To increase fuel economy, Fiesta features a new 1.6-liter Duratec engine with Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) that delivers 120 horsepower, an aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff and an engine accessory drive system that improves efficiency by reducing the energy it takes to power the air conditioner and alternator.

In addition, the Fiesta also features the PowerShift transmission, a six-speed automatic that combines the fuel benefits of a manual with the convenience of an automatic. Combine that with electric power-assisted steering, another fuel saver and some aerodynamic optimizations and you have a car that can go a long way on a single tank of fuel.

"We worked hard to deliver the class-leading fuel economy Ford is becoming synonymous for," said Steve Pintar, Fiesta chief nameplate engineer. "To be the only vehicle in the segment to deliver 40 mpg is something we feel consumers will appreciate."

The 2011 Fiesta with standard five-speed manual transmission is EPA rated at 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway.

These efficiency innovations combine with the stylish and aerodynamically clean Fiesta body design to efficiently slip through the wind with both fuel savings and reduced wind noise.

Fiesta is built for North American markets at Ford's manufacturing facility in Cuautitlan, Mexico. The vehicle goes on sale in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body styles – with the sedan starting at $13,995, including destination charges – at Ford dealerships this summer.

"We have kept our promise and priced all four Ford Figo models very competitively to emphasise Ford's commitment to this huge segment of the growing Indian automobile market," said Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India. "We are committed to setting new benchmarks with Figo in this segment. Figo offers more features, interior space, technology and durability than other vehicles at this price in the segment."

Beginning with an excellent foundation that includes a proven structure and chassis, both interior and exterior styling follows the global kinetic design elements that help harmonise the car with other models in the global Ford lineup.

Modern, sleek styling turns heads
On the exterior, the tri-plane front end, distinct fenders and a "comet tail" side treatment that starts at the front fenders and carries through the doors into the quarter panels combine to give the car a sporty and aggressive appearance and develop its unique personality. The car's large headlamps have a dynamic shape that helps define the element of speed and agility for the Figo.

The personality that Figo expresses on the outside carries over into the interior of the vehicle.

Inside, a free-flowing instrument panel greets the driver. Seating comfort is enhanced with a design specific for Figo that is all-new and includes fabric seat inserts with a specific bolster and trim pattern.

All models feature a black-themed interior highlighted with red or blue accents. Door panels on the up-level models include cloth inserts with distinctive red colour matching the seat pattern. On ZXI and Titanium models, consumers also will be able to choose a coral red coloured instrument panel option. The bold colour themes are inspired by India's colourful traditions and taste. The Titanium model is extensively equipped and includes Antilock Braking System and standard driver and passenger airbags.

Other features included on the ZXI and Titanium models include dual-cluster instrument gauges for speedometer and tachometer, vanity mirror for the front seat passenger, power-adjustable rearview mirrors for both passenger and driver. The interior of both models also includes extensive use of bright or polished aluminum trim on the door pull cups, console and around the gauges.

Generous front seat travel, at 210 millimetres, comfortably accommodates nearly every driver.

The rear seat is designed for three adults and can easily fold down to offer generous storage. Combined with the 284 litres of storage capacity in the trunk, Figo has more available storage than any other vehicle in its class.

Among the many standard interior features is a heater and air-conditioning system designed to provide best-in-class performance for a range of temperatures from -10 to 49 degrees Celsius.

Other smart features include Lane Change Indication that flashes indicators three times, eliminating the need to hold the stalk. Hazard deceleration alerts trailing drivers when vehicle speed rapidly decreases. The hazard lamps automatically flash when vehicle speed suddenly decreases to below 96 kilometres per hour.

Figo offers two fuel-efficient engines for the Indian market.
A new 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers 52.44 kW (71.35 PS) @ 6250 rpm and 102 Nm (10.4 kgm) @ 4000 rpm. Ideally geared for Indian traffic, fuel efficiency for the 1.2-litre is 15.6 kilometres per litre. The proven, class-leading 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel engine also will be available for Figo with outstanding fuel efficiency of 20 kilometres per litre. Horsepower is rated at 50.72 kW (69 PS) @ 4000 rpm. Torque is equally impressive with 160Nm (16.3 kgm) at 2000 rpm.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard equipment on both engines. The clutch has been designed for low effort due to frequent application for shifting in high traffic found in the Indian market.

Zero to 100 kilometres per hour performance is 15.5 seconds for the petrol engine and 15.8 seconds for the diesel variant.

Based on Ford's proven global small car architecture, Figo has been thoroughly tuned for Indian drivers. With the longest wheelbase in the B-car segment at 2489 millimetres, chassis dynamics have been optimized with new steering and suspension components.

The standard power-assist steering system is tuned to require less effort for parking and tight traffic maneuvers and offers precision and agility at higher highway speeds. An anti-lock braking system is offered on the Titanium model.

Service for the new Figo also has been enhanced. Ford India recently announced the opening of 28 new dealerships in India, bringing the total number of Ford outlets to 164 facilities in 97 cities. Nearly 50 facilities feature Quick Service, a new servicing process that is designed to quickly perform routine maintenance in less than 90 minutes.

As part of the initial pricing, all Figo models will be covered with Roadside Assistance for two years. Additional extended warranty plans and total maintenance options will be available to the consumer. Combined with service intervals that are among the longest, and high-durability parts that are competitively priced, Figo is among the leaders with a standard scheduled service plan of five years or 100,000 kilometres.

"Given where the Sub-B segment has traditionally been in terms of content, space and price, we feel Figo will open new opportunities for consumers looking for a better choice," Boneham said. "When you look at all the features, generous interior proportions, styling and fuel efficiency, all Figo models are extensively equipped and truly a bargain at these price points."

New Ford Figo Brings Kinetic Design for Economy & Small Cars in India

Say goodbye to the two-box design strategy for economy cars and hello to kinetic design with the new Ford Figo.

When the desig n team for the new Figo met with the marketing team from India, the direction was clear: ''We Want More''. After deciding on packaging objectives that needed to be met, such as reducing the overall length of the car to suit the Indian market, the designers were given the go-ahead to apply a near-clean sheet approach to both the interior and exterior.

Exterior Design:

Starting with an excellent structure and chassis, both interior and exterior designers took the Ford kinetic brand philosophy and applied it to the new Indian model.

"Fortunately for us, we had a great car, terrific architecture and solid proportions from the global chassis and structure," said Scott Strong, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa (APA) design director. "We started with a vehicle that already had a good stance and a nice contemporary silhouette."

According to Strong, while initial concepts were well received, the design team was encouraged with feedback from clinics that Indian customers were ready for a fresh approach to new small car design.

With the backing of Ford management and the Indian marketing team, the design team went to work adding more personality to the Figo and strategically taking elements of the global Ford kinetic design philosophy and adding them to the new interior and exterior designs.

The new designs were presented at a second round of customer clinics and shown to a group of potential Figo buyers. By the second clinic, designers knew they had hit the nail on the head with the Indian consumer.

Figo's exterior styling follows the global kinetic design elements that help harmonise the car with other models in the Ford global line-up, including Focus and Mondeo.

Starting with the tri-plane front end, elements including the split line on the top of the bonnet line up perfectly with the top of the headlamps and combine to give the car a sporty and aggressive appearance and develop the car's unique personality. The car's large headlamps have a dynamic shape that helps define the element of speed and agility for the Figo.

Underneath, the lower grille opening emulates what now appears on many global Ford models. The lower grille, painted black, is flanked by removable inserts that can be supplanted with driving lamps that are available as an accessory through Ford dealers. The upper grille, also painted black, pulls from Ford kinetic design with the "cat whisker" shape.

All models have a large pronounced "FORD" emblem located in the centre of the grille. On High-series models, the grille is complimented with a chrome strip running along the top of it.

The distinct Figo front fenders also include the side turn indicator lamp ornamentation that is found on many Ford passenger cars today. Trimmed in chrome on the high models, the small chiselled section behind the trim provides the starting point for the "comet tail" side treatment that has been designed through both side doors and carries into the quarter panel.

On the bottom, doors also feature extensive light catching sculpting.

High-series models also include door handles painted to match the body colour, adding to the upscale presence of the vehicle.

To ensure a quiet interior, doors on the Figo include new rubber seal designs to decrease wind noise inside the passenger compartment. On models equipped with diesel engines, double seals are used at the door openings. The daylight opening (DLO) or the side glass area features a black B pillar and is surrounded by black trim. The long, fast DLO adds to the sporty stance of the Figo.

From the rear, the Figo continues with kinetic design cues. The rear back light, along with a subtle hint of a spoiler located in the tailgate adds to the dynamism and muscular appeal. The rear back light is flush-mounted for reduced wind noise. On High-series models, a rear wiper and nozzle sprayer are included. The centre high-mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) is located in the rear roofline. To help ensure visibility in city traffic, the new tail lamps are located high in the rear quarter panel.

Pronounced arches over the rear wheels reinforce Figo's well-planted footprint.

Interior Design:

The personality that Figo expresses on the outside carries over into the interior of the vehicle with an all-new design that communicates a simple elegance with quality, character and honesty.

The overall strategy was to make the driver and occupants feel special regardless of the trim level that a customer chooses.

On the inside, Figo provides some of the best interior ergonomics and proportions including 1084 millimetres of front legroom, 1358 millimetres of front shoulder room and 1001 millimetres of front headroom.

Second row proportions are best in the segment with rear seat leg, shoulder and headroom at 860 millimetres, 1300 millimetres and 959 millimetres respectively.

On Entry-level models, the overall theme is subtlety combined with harmony.

The instrument panel is free flowing and smooth with a textured surface. The instrumentation on the Entry series includes a speedometer and fuel gauge. Warning lights for engine coolant, oil pressure and voltage are included in the cluster to alert the driver.

Also included are alerts for 'door ajar', 'headlamps on' and seat belts. Diesel models include an alert for 'water in fuel'. All models include a 12-volt power socket to charge personal items, including cell phones. High-series models also are equipped with power windows for the front doors. Quarter windows are fixed on all models for extra security. Rear doors are fitted with child door locks that prevent children from inadvertently opening doors while the car is in motion. When activated, doors can only be opened from the outside. On High-series models with automatic door locks, all doors automatically lock after the vehicle reaches a speed of seven kilometers per hour.

Both the Mid- and High-series models have front and rear doors fitted with cloth inserts that match the seat fabric design. High-series models also include pull cups with a painted satin aluminum finish. The rear seat for the Figo has been newly designed to include a full folding rear seat back that greatly increases cargo carrying capacity. When folded down, cargo carrying capacity is nearly doubled to easily accommodate large suitcases. Truck capacity is a generous 284 litres – the largest in its class.

Three-point safety belts are provided for the outboard rear passengers while a lap belt is included for the middle passenger. To help passenger egress from the car, folding passenger grab handles are provided above each passenger door. Front and rear doors swing out 72 degrees respectively, for easy entry into the passenger cabin. All models include full carpeting throughout the interior. Increased sound insulation has been added under the hood and at the firewall to ensure a quiet cabin environment.

Audio:
Housed in the centre of the instrument panel of the Mid- and High-series model is a standard AM/FM radio with CD/MP3 capability. The 100 watt radio includes two AM and three FM bands. Scan and preset scan can be used to scan all six preset frequencies in a particular band. An auto-store function can be used to scan and store up to six frequencies in default locations.

Radio Data System (RDS) is standard on all Figo audio systems. RDS is a communications protocol standard that embeds small amounts of digital information in conventional FM broadcasts, including time, station identification and programme information. RDS also includes an additional text feature that displays the track name.

A sensitivity setting on the radio allows stronger or weaker signals to be delivered at optimal range. Speed-sensing volume also is standard. This helps maintain the volume level of the radio based on external noises.

Connectivity for the iPod is included with an "Aux-in" port located on the front fascia of the radio. An accessory function for USB also can be added. A scan function that helps drivers navigate through hundreds of songs is available and plays a new track every ten seconds.

An equalizer function ideally sets the sound for different music genres, including jazz, pop, classic and rock. Users can also adjust the bass, treble, balance and fader function as desired. High-series models include Bluetooth connectivity. A simple tap on the redial button of the audio screen calls the last number used. Customers can access their phonebook, missed calls, received calls, dialed numbers and redial though the car's speakers.

Drivers also can accept or decline any call on the audio unit. Other functions included are second call alert, swapping of calls between current and new calls, call mute and privacy mode. The audio unit also can be security coded with a password that needs to be authenticated when the unit is removed from the battery.

Four speakers are included in the Mid- and High-series models and are located in the door trim.

Inside and out, the design of Figo lives up to its name – cool!

Ford India Starts Production of Figo 1.2L Engine in Chennai Plant

With a capacity of 250,000 engines a year, Chennai, India stands poised to become a major hub for the exportation of both diesel and gasoline engines moving into the next decade. The new engine plant is more than 40,000 square metres and will quadruple production capacity of the engine manufacturing facility. Currently, a single production line produces approximately 60,000 diesel engines a year.

Part of Ford Motor Company's US$500mn investment at the Maraimalai Nagar site, the new engine plant is designed to meet the growing needs of the Indian vehicle market and is an advanced manufacturing centre that has been created with the world's best practices for engine manufacturing.

"This engine plant was created with a 'best of the best' approach," said Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India. "We benchmarked against other competitive facilities globally, as well as the current volume manufacturers in India for quality and production efficiency."

Ford Figo IndiaInitially, the plant will focus on the assembly of both the common rail 1.4L diesel engine and the new 1.2L petrol engine. Both engines, along with locally sourced Ford's IB5 transmissions, will be fitted in the new Ford Figo that will be produced at the plant starting in the first quarter of 2010.

The new 1.2L engine has been specifically designed for the Indian market with emphasis on fuel efficiency. The engine also was engineered specifically to run on 88 RON fuel, an important consideration for the Indian market and meet the Bharat IV emission standards, along with complying the latest Euro 4 requirements for export markets.

The 1.2L engine is based upon the family of Ford SIGMA engines and is one of ten types of engines the plant is capable of producing. Displacement for the SIGMA engines range up to 1.6L with engines available with 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions. Among the first markets to receive the SIGMA 1.4L and 1.6L are countries in the ASEAN region.

The 1.4L diesel engine that currently is produced at the facility will continue production at the plant with increasing volumes. While the plant has been continually producing diesel engines, the new line is completely flexible and will have the ability to handle both diesel and petrol engines simultaneously, depending on market demand and production requirements.

Production of the engines begins with raw castings of the blocks, cylinder heads and crankshafts arriving from Indian and international suppliers for final machining at the facility. The machine shop encompasses more than 16,000 square metres and will include a fully flexible, four-axis CNC machining centre for the cylinder head, block and crankshaft lines with a central coolant facility.

Crankshafts for both the diesel and petrol engines are machined with a fully automated Gantry loading system. Both forged (diesel) and cast (petrol) engine crankshafts will be machined at the new facility. With the launch of the new Figo, the plant is capable of producing up to 250,000 engines annually.

Following final machining, the inspection process for major components will be measured thorough state-of- the-art Coordinated Measuring Machines. Quality checks for best-in-class metal purity also will be inspected at on-site labs prior to assembly operations.

The new engine assembly line stretches approximately 900 metres and nearly 37 percent is fully or semi- automated. Additionally, the new flexible line is set up to produce all engine variants including 1.2L, 1.4L and 1.6L in both petrol and diesel, with a continuous mixed flow and doesn't require to be "bundled" or batch built.

Best practices, including automation in certain assembly operations, have been adopted from Ford's global operations throughout the facility. In critical areas, including piston and camshaft installation, operations are performed manually by highly skilled technicians. Nearly 52 percent of the parts for the engines, including piston/rings/connecting rods are kitted prior to installation to help facilitate ease of installation at the operator level. With the new expansion, Ford India has created close to 700 new jobs in the engine plant.

Seventy-nine percent of the diesel engine parts and 60 percent of the petrol engine components are produced locally in India. Like the assembly operation for vehicles at Chennai, engine component manufacturers and suppliers are conveniently located nearby for better logistics.

While the Indian consumer will be able to choose either the 1.4L Duratorq TDCi diesel or 1.2L Duratec petrol engines for the Figo, both engines will be equipped with Ford's IB5 manual transmission for the Indian market. Export engines will be produced with either the ability to be equipped with the manual or Ford's new 6-speed automatic transmission.

To help reduce shipping weights, export engines will be shipped minus the transmission. Local assembly plants will complete final assembly by adding the transmission as required by market demand, demonstrating growing supplier capabilities.

As part of the plant's continual efforts at 100 percent quality, four engine dynamometers are located on-site at Chennai. Production engines are regularly audited from the assembly line and thoroughly tested on the dynamometers to ensure quality, performance and durability standards are met. Production validation tests are conducted on all engine variations in these facilities to meet standards that are equivalent to 200,000kms. On road durability and endurance testing in dusty and rough road conditions as well as high idle city driving also is evaluated.

Every assembled engine is subjected to a battery of highly sophisticated cold tests including pre-injection for fuel injectors, sensor connectivity, fuel rail leakage, oil pressure and camshaft positioning. Additionally simulated Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH) testing to meet global quality standards is conducted.

Under normal operations, one engine is inspected per 500 built. On new engines, including the 1.2L that will be standard equipment on the new Ford Figo, engineers have been testing engines at increased frequency, followed by a complete teardown to measure wear patterns and any irregularities in the new engine. Quality issues are addressed immediately with changes implemented prior to further production.

Quality levels at the engine plant are expected to reach even higher levels with the new global Class 8 ISO processes and practices in place that insure minimal dust and particulate levels are maintained throughout the plant. The new 1.2L petrol engine will be produced initially in India for Figo and will be a worthy first addition to the family of SIGMA engines.

Export of the engines to additional markets within the Asia Pacific & Africa region and the ASEAN region is expected to begin in 2011.

Ford India Offers Complete Package for Figo

More than 150 of India's top Ford dealers and salespersons got their first opportunity behind the wheel of the new Ford Figo last week and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

Michael Boneham, Ford India president and managing director, unveiled Ford's newest offering for India providing the first glimpse of the interior followed by a series of technical presentations outlining Figo's key attributes.

The group of dealers also had an opportunity to meet with several key executives behind the design and development of the new Figo, including Scott Strong, APA design director, and Anthony Hall, engineering director for Ford small cars.
