Can the 2011 Dodge Caravan Impress the Judges?

Can the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan impress the judges? At first glance the Grand Caravan for 2011 may look like another plain-Jane minivan-style family conveyance. However, it is not only auto show judges but, more importantly, customers from all walks of life who are duly impressed as soon as they take a closer look at this reliable, yet comfortable and powerful, mini-van.

It was the first Dodge Caravan that created the entire mini-van concept back in the 1984 model year. Today, with the sweeping changes and updates that Dodge has implemented for the 2011 model, the Caravan has come full circle as it re-establishes itself as the most valuable player of the mini-van league.

The main improvement is to be found inside the roomy cabin, where "Stow 'n Go" seating modifications allow drivers to easily convert the same vehicle they use to transport their children to soccer practice into a tough hauling and transport van that can easily be filled with lumber and cement for a do-it-yourself home remodeling project, or sports and camping gear for an extended vacation or nature excursion. That is not the only interior improvement, though, as the 2011 model of the Grand Caravan also boasts a new design that is flawlessly executed with higher quality materials.

Dodge has also updated the basic engine for the new Grand Caravan, replacing an older, less efficient engine with the highly acclaimed and powerful 283-horsepower Pentastar V6 that also powers its sports cars and SUV models. This engine delivers very respectable fuel mileage, and combined with a six-speed automatic transmission, it makes the Grand Caravan the quickest and highest performing of any minivan model available in the United States for the 2011 model year. Torque steering adds to the performance and versatility of the new Caravan.

Of course, a mini-van is first and foremost a family vehicle for which safety is a paramount consideration, and the Dodge Grand Caravan is a leader in that realm as well. With active front head restraints, and a full set of airbags including driver knee airbags as well as side curtain and front seat side airbags, the Grand Caravan provides ample protection in the event of a crash. Antilock disc brakes are standard as are stability and traction control, with safety-oriented options including rear parking and cross-traffic sensors, a rearview camera and a blind spot monitoring system.

Price is another factor that makes the Dodge Caravan quite impressive, as it is the minivan that provides the best set of options for its base price of just under $30,000. It is available in five trim packages, from the stripped-down commercially oriented C/V and entry-level Express through the Mainstreet and Crew and up to the luxurious R/T that adds both higher performance and top-class interior amenities to the Grand Caravan package.

At first glance, the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan may just look like another mini-van. However, a close look at the redesigned exterior, and a test drive that showcases everything it has to offer, presents a very impressive picture indeed.

2012 Dodge viper
The brand new 2012 Dodge Viper is the epitome of what the modern American sports car should be. This year’s model sports a completely new design, incorporating lower hood lines, more deeply cut side scallops and the fenders have been swept back more—when compared with last year’s model. The new model of the 2012 Viper has only been visual shown to car dealers. The actual showing of this new vehicle will occur closer to the release date.As anticipated by the house, Dodge Viper could be proposed in a list in 2012. The car is among the most beloved modern muscle car, perhaps the most representative of the category. The Viper went into production in 1991, after the presentation to the Indianapolis 500. The production of sport was subject to a temporary stop, which will start from next July.

For now we expect only 500 more units, then nothing. As said Ralph Gilles to Salon Chicago, when there are other things to think about, but there will be time to resume the argument left open. The controller design Chrysler and CEO Dodge identified as the focus of attention of the group with two segments of mid-size sedan and crossover. But the Viper will come back to life, although at present it is necessary to come together and focus on large numbers to defeat the economic depression.

2011 Dodge Caliber C

What's New for 2011

The 2011 Dodge Caliber receives improved steering feel, additional functions for the navigation system and standard stability control for most trim levels.

Introduction

A while back, Chrysler revived one of its earlier slogans that boldly stated: "In the car business, you lead, follow or get out of the way." Obviously, the brand's marketing execs were hoping to convince people that they're leading. But with vehicles like the 2011 Dodge Caliber, it's still very much a case of following.
Based on specs, the Caliber would seem to be very much in the mix. In terms of size, this entry-level Dodge model resides in a sort of middle ground between hatchbacks and small crossover SUVs (though it's still classified as a compact four-door hatchback). A choice of two four-cylinder engines is offered, and the Caliber can haul about as much cargo as other hatchbacks. But in actual execution, it still ends up being pretty mediocre.
Disappointingly, the Caliber lacks the lively performance characteristic of this category. Handling ability and power output from either engine are middling at best. Even some of the Caliber's unique features -- a built-in beverage cooler, rechargeable flashlight and flip-down liftgate speakers -- seem more like curious novelties than enticements. The quality of the interior is also a bit of a disappointment, despite it undergoing a makeover last year.
We recommend looking at segment leaders like the Hyundai Elantra Touring, Mazda 3, Scion xB, Toyota Matrix and Volkswagen Golf before settling on the 2011 Dodge Caliber. All of these alternatives offer significant performance and interior quality advantages. In the end, Chrysler's tag line has rung true, but perhaps not in the way the company intended.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2011 Dodge Caliber is a compact four-door hatchback offered in five trim levels. The entry-level Express model comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, heated outside mirrors, air-conditioning, cloth upholstery, 60/40-split-folding rear seats, full power accessories, remote keyless entry, cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, an in-dash beverage cooler, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth connectivity and a four-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary audio/USB jacks and satellite radio.
Stepping up to the Mainstreet trim level adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a chrome grille, a sportier suspension, foglights, a tachometer, a power-adjustable driver seat, a fold-flat front passenger seat, reclining rear seatbacks and a rechargeable flashlight.
The Uptown model gets you rear disc brakes (versus drums), automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats and a premium nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system with steering-wheel-mounted controls and flip-down speakers in the liftgate.
The sporty Caliber Heat takes the Mainstreet model's equipment list and adds 18-inch polished alloy wheels, chrome exterior trim, sport-tuned suspension and steering, rear disc brakes (versus drums) and specialized cloth interior trim.
Building on the Caliber Heat is the Rush, which adds a larger 2.4-liter engine, 18-inch chrome-clad alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, automatic climate control, leather upholstery and a premium audio system with a touchscreen interface and 30-gigabyte hard drive.
Many of the options found on the upper trim levels are offered as options on the lower trims. Additionally, a sunroof and a navigation system are also available.

Powertrains and Performance

The front-wheel-drive 2011 Dodge Caliber is offered with a choice of two different four-cylinder engines. A 2.0-liter engine rated at 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque is standard on all trim levels except the Rush. The Rush gets a 2.4-liter that makes 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque. This engine is optional on the Uptown. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual for the Express, Heat and Rush, while a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard on the Mainstreet and Uptown. The CVT with manually controlled simulated stepped gears is offered on the Heat and Rush as an option.
Fuel economy is decent across the board, though mileage suffers slightly with the CVT. The 2.0-liter engine returns EPA estimates of 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined with the manual transmission, and 23/27/24 mpg with the CVT. The larger 2.4-liter engine is nearly as good, with EPA ratings of 23 mpg city/29 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined for manual-transmission-equipped models, and 22/27/24 for versions fitted with the CVT.

Safety

Standard safety features for the 2011 Caliber include a driver-side knee airbag, side curtain airbags, active front head restraints and antilock brakes (rear drums for the Express and Mainstreet, four-wheel discs for the other trims). Stability control isn't available on the Express but is standard on the remaining trim levels. Front-seat side airbags are offered as options for all but the Express trim.
The Caliber has not been rated using the government's new, more strenuous 2011 crash-testing procedures. Its 2010 ratings (which aren't comparable to 2011 tests) resulted in a perfect score of five out of five stars in both frontal and side impacts. Results were mixed in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests, however, with a top "Good" rating in the frontal-offset tests and a next-to-lowest "Marginal" rating in side-impact tests.

Interior Design and Special Features

Among competing hatchbacks and crossovers, the 2011 Dodge Caliber's interior ranks midpack. There are plenty of hard plastics inside, but a cabin makeover last year added cushioned materials in key touch points. A decent amount of head- and legroom ensures comfort for front and rear passengers, while the driver benefits from good outward visibility, legible gauges and intuitive controls.
More noteworthy is the Caliber's practicality, with 60/40-split-folding rear seatbacks and a flat load floor to accommodate bulky items. All but the Express trim models (with its flat-folding front passenger seat) can accept longer items, like surfboards or lumber while still being able to close the rear liftgate. Maximum cargo capacity is 48 cubic feet, which is comparable to other hatchbacks, but considerably smaller than some compact crossovers. The Caliber also features some road-trip convenience, adding a beverage cooler built into the glovebox that holds four 12-ounce cans.

Driving Impressions

One word to describe how the 2011 Dodge Caliber drives: mediocre. It neither impresses nor really offends behind the wheel. Acceleration is listless with the base 2.0-liter engine and only slightly improves with the 2.4-liter. Either engine, however, is further hindered when saddled with the CVT.
The Caliber's ride quality is generally acceptable, though the sport-tuned suspension in the Heat and Rush models may be too rough for some. Handling, too, is adequate but drivers seeking excitement should look to other hatchbacks or crossovers.

Following up on last year’s interior redo, Dodge has made more changes to its compact Caliber for 2011. Unfortunately, shedding theintroduced for 2010 was not among the alterations; as a refresher, they are Express, Mainstreet, Uptown, Heat, and Rush.
Changes across the board include the addition of six new paint colors with whimsical names like Mango Tango and Redline 2. Stability control becomes standard on all but the Express trim level, and the optional navigation system gains Sirius traffic information. A new 18-inch chrome wheel design is available for Uptown models.

There are only slight mechanical updates: All models except the Express get revised steering, while the Heat and Rush receive retuned shocks and a thicker rear anti-roll bar. The Caliber’s thrashy, unrefined powertrains are regrettably unchanged. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque, while a 2.4-liter four with 172 hp and 165 lb-ft is standard on Rush and optional on Uptown trims.

Spicier Dodge Avenger R/T returns for 2012

If you're looking for an Avenger  with a little more bite, Dodge may have just the car for you. The company will unveil its new Avenger R/T at the 2011 New York Auto Show this week, and though the drivetrain has been left largely untouched, the mid-sized fighter now packs a tighter suspension.
Dodge will be at the upcoming motor show in New York, publicly display and Avenger R / T, model 2012. Under the hood of 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine with Pentastar 283hp, it’s combined with six-speed automatic gearbox, part of the package, among other things includes setting sports suspension, alloy wheels 18 inches, black lights, rear spoiler, R / T tags, heated front seats and a red R / T logo on the headrests, leather steering wheel, dashboard polished, and new pedals. equipment is also located, and the Boston Acoustic sound system, front and side airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, ABS. 2012 Dodge Avenger R / T will be in the showrooms of American dealers found in the third quarter of this year.

Dodge engineers managed to increase the vehicle's roll stiffness by 18 percent thanks to upping the front spring rates by 17 percent and damper rates by 15 percent. Out back, the rear springs see an increase in stiffness of 12 percent while the back damper rates jump by 20 percent. The Avenger R/T also benefits from a larger rear stabilizer bar – 21 mm (up from 19 mm).

Dodge says it's shooting for a more spirited, performance sedan driving experience, though there's no indication that the vehicle's brakes have been upgraded in kind.

Power still comes from the same torque-steer happy 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with 283 horsepower mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, so hopefully the firmer suspension has quelled the powertrain's wayward tendencies somewhat. Either way, Dodge says that the combo is good for 19 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

Outside, the Avenger R/T is differentiated from its lower-trim siblings with aesthetic tweaks like a body-color grille and R/T graphics on the front fenders. Large, 19-inch alloy wheels are also standard and the interior gets a special gauge cluster with the tachometer taking center stage, along with a special perforated leather steering wheel and "SRT-inspired" pedals. Rounding off the changes are special fabric seats with embroidered logos. Hit the Jump for the full press release.

2011 Dodge Challenger earlier

The 2011 Challenger is a 2-door, 5-passenger sports coupe, or sports car, available in 3 trims, ranging from the SE to the SRT8.

Upon introduction, the SE is equipped with a standard 3.6-liter, V6, 305-horsepower, flexible fuel engine that achieves 18-mpg in the city and 27-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The SRT8 is equipped with a standard 6.4-liter, V8, 470-horsepower engine that achieves 14-mpg in the city and 23-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard.

The 2011 Challenger is a carryover from 2010.

Previously, Leftlane caught wind of a NADA report that detailed some pricing and basic information on a few aspects of the 2011 Challenger’s powertrain lineup, but the report lacked some crucial data for the most hardcore fans. Now, thanks to a leaked brochure obtained by Ontario Street Car, we now know how much power will be packed into the all-new HEMI.
What’s under the hood
According to a brochure, the base model 2011 Dodge Challenger  SE will come with Chrysler’s new high-feature 3.6-liter V6 engine, packing 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque (compared to 290 horsepower under the hood of the  sing the same engine). The Challenger’s current five-speed automatic will remain, fuel economy will be rated at 19 city, 26 highway miles per gallon.
Reflecting its new engine, the Challenger’s base price will inflate from its current $23,695 to $25,305 – an increase of $1,610.
The mid-level Challenger R/T will remain relatively unchanged, but is still in line for a higher MSRP. The 2011 Challenger R/T will see a price increase from $31,610 to $32,770.
We’ve known that the Challenger SRT8 model would swap out its 6.1-liter V8 for a new 6.4-liter unit for the 2011 model year, but until now we could only speculate in regards to power figures. Although not as high as many rumors indicating it could produce as much as 500 horsepower, the 6.4-liter HEMI will be rated at 475 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Unlike the other Challenger models, the SRT8 is listed as having a price decrease for 2011, dropping from its current price of $43,680 to $43,100.
The mid-level Challenger R/T’s 5.7-liter HEMI sees a small power bump to 379 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, but only when paired with a manual transmission. An earlier report suggested that it could see a small highway fuel economy increase as well – likely Jeep Grand Cherokee  due to some light gear ratio and aerodynamics tweaking.
Interior clean-up
The 2011 Challenger will lose its four-spoke steering wheel and will gain the new three-spoke unit already seen in the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The wheel provides cruise control, Bluetooth and trip computer controls on the front, while it brings back Chrysler’s signature rear-mounted audio controls – a feature not seen on the 2010 Challenger.
Otherwise, it looks like the Challenger will gain an automatic mode for its climate control system and revised gauges. Also new will be active head restraints and standard side curtain and seat mounted airbags.
Overall, however, the Challenger doesn’t look like it will gain the interior makeover anticipated by many.
Styling tweaks
Outside, the only obvious change to the Challenger seen in our spy photos is that its lower grille has been flipped upside down and it gains a much more pronounced front spoiler – at least on the SRT8 model.
A closer inspection reveals new exterior door handles. It’s also hard to say for sure, but it looks like Chrysler’s popular Inferno Red Crystal will be available on the SRT8 for 2011 – that metallic shade isn’t currently available on SRT8s. That said, it isn’t unusual for a pre-production car to wear incorrect badges or to be painted in an incorrect shade.

2011 Dodge durang

We’ll cut to the chase: This 2011 Dodge Durango is the brand’s best vehicle not called Charger. After a two-year hiatus, the Durango is back, with a unibody design based on the same underpinnings that spawned Jeep’s stellar 2011 Grand Cherokee, which came in tops in its first comparo. As handsome as the last one was brash, the 2011 Durango offers rear- or all-wheel drive, standard seven-butt seating (the Jeep is shorter and seats only five), a swank soft-touch and chrome-trimmed interior, and assembly quality that rivals anything else in the segment. Although the new Durango is heavy—our rear-drive V-6 model weighed in at 4955 pounds, and Chrysler quotes 5200 to 5350 pounds for trucks with the Hemi V-8—Dodge is nonetheless positioning it as a performance-oriented alternative to the current segment offerings, a claim backed up by the retention of rear-wheel drive and the resurrection of the Durango R/T, which nabs a standard Hemi V-8, unique exhaust tuning, sportier styling, and a lowered, tuned suspension.

2011 Dodge Charger

Inspired by the original Dodge Chargers of the 1960s, the redesigned Dodge Charger builds on the 2006-2010 model it replaces and gains a number of new style and powertrain features.
The all-new Charger is immediately recognizable but boasts many enhancements inside, outside and underneath its more aggressive skin.
From the front, the cross-hair grille returns, although the headlamps are more canted than before and the fascia tilts at a slightly more aggressive angle. The Charger's side profile is sleeker and more coupe-esquire than the outgoing model and revised wheel designs look more upscale than before.
Perhaps the biggest changes have been applied to the Charger's tail, where a full-width tail lamp arrangement visually links the Charger with both past Dodge models and the company's Dodge Challenger sibling.
Dodge calls the tail lamps a "racetrack" graphic when their 164 LED are illuminated. Below the tail lamps, new squared-off tailpipes exit a more finished-looking f aux diffuser.
The interior - a point of contention for many Chrysler products in recent years - now features upgraded materials and more cosmetically appealing designs, as well as Garmin navigation with Sirius Travel Link and the meaty corporate-wide three-spoke steering wheel that has arrived on nearly every new Chrysler product for the latest model year.
Several upscale options have been added to the Charger for the latest model, including adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring with rear cross path protection and a rear backup camera with grid lines.
Although the Charger still rides on a Mercedes-Benz-derived platform, Dodge says that the architecture has been re-engineered so much that it now considers it its "second-generation" E-segment platform.
The all-new Dodge Charger is available in the U.S. in three models: Dodge Charger SE, Dodge Charger R/T and Dodge Charger R/T WAD.
Dodge Charger SE now features one all-new V6 engine instead of the previous two. The new 3.6-liter Pentagram V6 engine delivers 292 horsepower (up 63 percent) and 260 lb-ft of torque (up 36 percent) compared with the previous entry-level 2.7-liter V6 engine.
When compared to the previous high-output 3.5-liter V6 engine, the new Pentastar V6 engine produces 42 more horsepower (up 16 percent), and 10 l.b-ft. more torque.
Dodge is emphasizing its Charger R/T WAD, which comes with 19-inch wheels, the 5.7-liter V8 and a segment-exclusive active transfer case with front axle disconnect. Dodge says the front axle disconnect helps save five percent on fuel economy by utilizing only rear-wheel-drive unless additional traction is needed.
Performance handling requires maximum grip, and the all-new Dodge Charger now holds .90 g. Aiding in the fastback four-door car's improved road-holding capabilities is more aggressive front- and rear-camber geometry.
Set at -1.0 degrees in the front and -1.75 degrees in the rear, Dodge Charger is set up for high-speed cornering with its tires leaning inboard at the top relative to the body.
All-new premium hydro-bushings combined with new mono tube shock absorbers, spring rates and redesigned front and rear multi-link suspension geometries improve performance handling dynamics, smooth braking characteristics and deliver a more comfortable ride.
Among other suspension .5-inch (13 mm) tighter tire-to-fender fitment, a .15-inch (4 mm) lowered overall ride height and larger 19-inch wheels with P235/55R19 all-season performance tires.
Beyond its lower center of gravity, the Dodge Charger R/T WAD also gains improved handling due to new upper- and lower-control arms and shock-absorber bushings. In addition new half shafts feature high-precision bearing units that are sealed for added quality and durability.
Transmitting the Dodge Charger's maximum grip to the driver is an all-new electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) system that features 25 percent quicker steering, more precise road feel and improved on-center tracking while reducing steering noise and fuel consumption.
