Hyundai and Kia have first been known to produce decent entry-level compact cars offering a wide range of standard features at low prices. Both automakers first offered a limited number of compact cars and later gradually expanded their presence with introducing more cars including the Accent, Elantra, Rio, Forte and others.
The above-mentioned compacts have always sold pretty well on the U.S. soil, but lately their sales have skyrocketed to new heights. According to latest sales data, Hyundai-Kia’s compact cars have topped the small car market in the U.S. during the first quarter of the year. It has happened for the first time that the South Korean carmaker outsold more established rivals, including the Toyota, Nissan and Ford.
Combined sales of Hyundai-Kia’s compact cars in the first three months of the fiscal year have hit 81.424 units. A number slightly outpaces Toyota’s 81.424 units – also set during the first quarter of 2011. The Korean carmaker’s market share among small and compact cars in 2011 rose to 16.5 percent from two years ago when it stood at 12.5 percent.
Carmaker’s compact car sales have soared significantly shortly after introducing a wide range of stylish cars including the 2011 Elantra four-door sedan, Kia Forte 5-door and Soul crossover. Hyundai Elantra has only been on sale for three months but already gained thousands of sales. Last month, when Hyundai recorded an overall monthly sales of 61.873 units, dealers across the States sold 19.255 units of new Elantra (best-ever sales result for the model), enough to take the second spot among Hyundai cars sold in the U.S. market.
