Hyundai to devote some U.S. marketing funds to children's cancer efforts

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Hyundai Motor America plans to spend two-thirds of its U.S. marketing budget in September to promote research and raise public awareness of pediatric cancer, CEO John Krafcik said Wednesday.

In addition, he said, Hyundai's 800 U.S. dealers have committed to donate $100 per vehicle sale in September for the cause with a $100 match by Hyundai. That money will be used for 60 grants of $100,000 to medical facilities and organizations involved in pediatric cancer research and care, Krafcik said.

As part of the overall marketing campaign, Hyundai will produce TV ads and run a wide media campaign to raise public awareness of childhood cancer, Krafcik said.

Pediatric cancer intervention has been a cause for Hyundai and its U.S. dealers over the years, Krafcik said. He said just 3 percent of annual grant funding by the National Institutes of Health is aimed at childhood cancer.
