Barring a new unforeseen technological advance (i.e. teleportation) we seem to be screaming towards a screeching halt in a never ending traffic jam. While everyone continues to argue over what type of engine/motor we need to put in our vehicles, the real issue is where are they all going to go? Even if we find a new battery technology that never needs recharging there is still a growing problem. The cost of building new roads has become prohibitive. The cost of repair on our failing bridges seems insurmountable. In reality, most states are balking at high speed rail systems, even if the construction is paid for by the federal government, because the day to day operation will never break even.
I believe the days of cars being driven by individuals are nearing an end. What I see is a trend towards networked cars, operated by satellite (like predator drones but computer automated) and unfortunately, government rules and mandates regarding which cars, which people and how much it will cost becoming the prevailing mode of transportation.
This is not meant to be a political article but whenever these things are brought up there will always be backlash. We need to begin working on entire organizations which can be run via computer at an individuals home. Rather than just assuming the infrastructure must continuously grow, how about we figure out ways to get things done with minimum transportation. I am all for globalization, but there is something wrong when you go to the local grocery store and all of the fruits are imported from overseas?
Just start thinking about it. What can you do in this regard? What can your company do? What kind of business will thrive in this environment? Maybe it's time for The Jetsons 3D Air Cars... I'll bet attorneys will have a field day.
